AT&T is probably getting the Huawei Mate 10 Pro

Huawei’s Honor brand is arguably more familiar to US consumers than Huawei itself, despite the company building Google’s Nexus 6P and selling the excellent Mate 9 unlocked at Best Buy and Amazon. The reality of the US market is that carriers run the show and if you can’t stock phones on their shelves, you’re basically hidden in the shadows. Just ask Sony or to some extent, HTC. Huawei has found great success around the globe, nipping at Apple’s heels as the third largest smartphone brand (behind Apple and Samsung), but their efforts in the US have been halfhearted at best. That might change, however, as their latest flagship is likely to land on AT&T early next year.

Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro was announced last month in Germany and has all the trimmings of a late 2017 flagship (for the most part). Specs include a 6-inch 2160080 OLED display, Kirin 970 SoC with a Mali G72 GPU, up to 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a 4,000mAh battery, Leica branded dual cameras with a 12 megapixel RGB and 20 megapixel monochrome, both at f/1.6, and an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. US availability wasn’t mentioned at launch, but XDA Developers have found mounting evidence that AT&T will carry the Mate 10 Pro in Q1 2018.

A recent Mate 10 Pro firmware file, BLA-A09-att-us, has all but confirmed it and is the latest build of Huawei’s EMUI 8.0 skin on Android Oreo. Plenty of AT&T bloatware is along for the ride as it’s a carrier variant. The international model’s firmware is BLA-L09. An interesting side note is that Firefox is also pre-installed alongside Google Chrome. Huawei and Mozilla could be starting to collaborate.

It’s very possible that the AT&T Mate 10 Pro will become official at CES 2018 in early January. Huawei announced that the Mate 9 would be sold in the US via Amazon at last year’s show, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.
